Our History

The Foothills Community Scholarship Foundation of La Cañada Flintridge, Inc. (FCSF) has been an integral part of our city for over five decades. In 1964, a group of people got together, and united by a shared vision to provide scholarships to local youth to attend community colleges, universities, trade or technical schools, they founded FCSF. That first year, the group awarded over $3,000 to five high school graduates.

Today, FCSF acknowledges their gratefulness to the original founding members for their foresight, and considers it a privilege to continue the tradition of awarding financial scholarships which, over the past 55 years, now total over $1 million to over 870 students!

In 1968, an auxiliary group, the Community Scholarship League, was formed to focus on fundraising that would support the ongoing provision of these highly popular scholarships. To see the history of fundraising, please click here. They created the concept of “Perpetual” scholarships, by which an individual or entity could establish a scholarship to honor someone by donating a designated sum or an ongoing amount. Over the years, this program was redesigned with specifications to ensure funding for these continuing scholarships. For more information on setting up a scholarship, contact President@CsfLaCanada.org or Treasurer@CsfLaCanada.org.

In 2002, the League and the Foundation merged to establish better continuity with their goals for the single purpose of providing cohesiveness of strategy and goal planning. That merger resulted in some of the more prolific years in CSF’s history, awarding annual scholarships totaling $50,000 for several successive years.

Each year our members, all of whom are volunteers, work together to raise and manage the monies to fund scholarships, to implement the scholarship process and to bring community awareness to our mission.
